Dear Lynn-Rose Community,
In the last edition of the newsletter, I shared some brief information on how schools use international accreditation frameworks as quality assurance mechanisms. Continuing with this theme and at a more granular level, one of the ways that school leaders look for and check for quality of lessons is through Learning Visits. As part of the International Schools Partnership (ISP), we utilize a research-based system of short visits to classrooms to "look for learning". This involves speaking with students, asking them to share about what they are learning and how they know the progress they are making.
Recently, we hosted Sara Macdonald (former Head of School at Lynn-Rose) for a one-day visit where she and I, along with the division principals and other school leaders, conducted a series of Learning Visits across the campuses. Working in pairs, we visited a variety of classrooms and debriefed about what we observed, after which feedback was shared with the teachers involved.
Strategies such as this are powerful ways in which we can examine learning closely and reflect on how effective we are in our teaching and learning strategies. It is also a tremendously valuable process for empowering students to talk about their learning and support their agency in being responsible for their learning.
Regular Learning Visits help facilitate our ethos as an IB school and a school where inquiry is at the heart of our educational approach. This ethos runs through our school and is now being planned for in Grades 11 and 12 as we proceed through the authorisation process for the IB Diploma Programme. In the next edition of the newsletter, I will share some thoughts on our recent two-day IB consultant visit and the progress we are making towards offering this esteemed programme.
Sincerely yours,Michael Arcidiacono
